Oslo demonstrations January 2009

January 2009

The police detained at least 27 people after a pro-Palestinian demonstration turned violent in Oslo.

The outburst was the worst in Norway since the 1980s.

Earlier the same evening some 15,000 people walked through the city centre for a peaceful, torchlit protest. Some of the protestors then attempted to reach the Israeli embassy. When they were stopped by the police, some started throwing rocks and bottles at the police.

As the police tried to separate the demonstrators with teargas and pushed them through the city center, the demonstrators lit trashcans on fire and blocked the main road, Karl Johans gate.
